City Palace with Villa Comunale

The villa already existed in the 18th century, with a parterres garden planted with citrus trees, as noted in the Map of the Duke of Noja. Owned by the Passaro family, it was donated to the Municipality of Herculaneum at the end of the 19th century and has since then been used first as a public park and in recent times has become the seat of the city administration.

The original construction was certainly elevated in the 19th-century restoration. The first floor is ornamented with stucco ashlars with architraved windows and a central portal, according to a rigidly symmetrical composition. On the upper floor the windows have gables with the exception of the central balcony window with a triangular gable. To the right of the deep hallway covered by a barrel-vaulted coffered ceiling is the entrance to the staircase, formed by a first ramp that splits into two symmetrical ones reaching the first piano nobile. Here a large room in neoclassical taste, with Doric columns and elegant decorative motifs, heralds the room now used for the City Council. The rear façade opens onto the park through the large arch of the hallway and four French doors that capture the light and the surrounding space. The garden, still used today as a public park, full of flower beds, ponds, seats retains some ancient trees.
