Walking along the lower rim of the crater of an active volcano is certainly a unique experience in itself. The opportunity to admire, jointly, one of the most beautiful views in the world, from the Gulf of Naples and the Sorrento Coast to the Cognoli of Mount Somma, makes it truly a must-see destination. Departure is from Herculaneum from the Piazzale located at 1000 m above sea level, at the end of the Ercolano-Vesuvio Provincial Road. In the Piazzale area, managed by the Park Authority, parking is not allowed and there are temporarily no public toilets. Please take this into account when organizing your excursion. For those arriving by motor, the parking and rest areas along the provincial road are managed and regulated by the City of Herculaneum (www.parkingsuvio.it). It is recommended to purchase parking only after having already purchased a ticket for the Gran Cono (full 10 euros, reduced 8 euros). Please note that tickets can only be purchased online and, given the lack of connection near the entrance, it is recommended to complete the purchase before going up. From the Piazzale you can already enjoy a splendid view of the northern slope of Monte Somma, with the Cognoli di Sant'Anastasia and Punta Nasone, the summit of the ancient volcano 1,132 meters high, opposite the Cognoli di Ottaviano and di Levante, while looking up, you can hold your breath observing from below what will be the ascent to the lower edge of the Sterminator Vesevo.
