Virtual Archaeological Museum

Just a stone's throw from the archaeological excavations of ancient Herculaneum stands the MAV, a center of culture and technology applied to cultural heritage and communication that is among the most advanced in Italy. Inside is a unique and extraordinary museum space: a virtual and interactive path where you can experience the thrill of an amazing journey back in time to a moment before the Plinian eruption of 79 AD destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Through scenographic reconstructions, visual interfaces and holograms, the visitor is led into a virtual dimension, where he or she can playfully and interactively experience the new opportunities that multimedia technology offers to the enjoyment of archaeological heritage.
More than seventy multimedia installations restore life and splendor to the main archaeological areas of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Baia, Stabia and Capri.

The MAV is an educational and cognitive place, where the real and the imaginary meet to bring to life new ways of learning and entertainment.

The museum is located in an area of 5,000 sq. m. on 3 levels, located in the heart of Herculaneum near the city's main tourist attractions: the archaeological excavations, the famous vintage market of Resina, Vesuvius National Park and the Golden Mile, the stretch of coastline at the foot of the volcano, along which stand the splendid 18th-century villas, fine examples of Neapolitan Baroque.
